About this site
Hello there!
My name is Serge Litvinov, and there are two things I love most in life: picture books and the novels of Mikhail Bulgakov. Do I even need to explain why this website exists?
I shudder to think how many years I’ve been collecting illustrations inspired by Bulgakov’s books.
I still remember how, many years ago—back when I was a schoolkid—I came across the first illustrated edition of “The Master and Margarita” I had ever seen, displayed in the central bookstore. The artwork blew me away with its expressiveness, but I couldn’t afford the book—it was astronomically expensive for a student. So instead, I would simply go to the store just to admire the spread under the glass, the way one might visit a museum to reconnect with a beloved painting and refresh its details in memory. I suspect the bookstore staff eventually started recognizing me.
That very edition marked the beginning of my Bulgakov illustration collection—though the real collecting began only years later, when I was old enough to actually splurge on a favorite hobby. And some time after that, when the collection reached a decent size, a natural desire arose: to share it with the world.
If you’re reading this, chances are you too find both Mikhail Bulgakov and the art inspired by his works fascinating. I’m truly glad about that. Welcome to the diverse visual worlds created by artists so different from one another—yet all inspired by the power of Bulgakov’s genius.
