Iwan Kulik was born in 1959 in the Ukrainian city of Cherkasy, on the Dnieper River so loved by Bulgakov. Ivan Ivanovich studied in Kyiv and Kharkiv, and then spent some time in Moscow and Leningrad. Since 1990, he has lived in Poland, in Warsaw.

Unfortunately, the novel The Master and Margarita with his illustrations was never published in Russia, even though the artist drew over a thousand illustrations for the book (unbelievable!). This page presents only a small portion of them. The works you see here were created in 2010–2011; Iwan Iwanovich kindly sent them to me from Poland. I am very grateful to him for this.

The works are very interesting, but it's not always easy to immediately understand who is who. Let's try, however.

  • “I have a sword and a hat with a feather...” Since he can’t be Mephistopheles, it means this is Woland

Artwork #1 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here he has gotten rid of the sword and feather, but we still recognize him by his different eyes

Artwork #2 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • But Berlioz and Bezdomny do not recognize him

Artwork #3 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • In front of Berlioz, as is right, a checkered citizen materialized from the sultry air, but Berlioz conspicuously ignores him. That’s why Fagott's face looks a bit upset

Artwork #4 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Hmm... is this Ivan Bezdomny with his anti-religious poem?

Artwork #5 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Ah, this is Annushka with the sunflower oil by the tram turnstile

Artwork #6 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And here Berlioz is run over. The tram has gone on, and the victim waves his hat in farewell. People wave back at him from the tram

Artwork #7 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Hiding from the scene of the crime on the tram's running board is Behemoth. People wave farewell to him too

Artwork #8 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • So, what do we have here? Ivan pursuing the consultant breaks into a bathroom with a naked woman?

Artwork #9 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here is Woland's gang

Artwork #10 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Behemoth with a primus stove in one hand... and a chicken leg in the other? Something is already burning behind him

Artwork #11 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • We always recognize Margarita by her yellow flowers. So, here is the main couple

Artwork #12 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here they are again

Artwork #13 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here they are

Artwork #14 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And once more. I think it's very sweet

Artwork #15 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And again!

Artwork #16 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • We know the Master's face from the previous drawings and can now recognize him

Artwork #17 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Well, good, but where is the biblical theme? Here, for example, is a man. He is bound. And he is a Judean. So, before us is Yeshua

Artwork #18 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Oh, gods, my gods!!

Artwork #19 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here is the wandering philosopher in front of the procurator

Artwork #20 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And here is Pilate washing his hands

Artwork #21 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Wash them or not, the sentence must be pronounced

Artwork #22 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here the assassins sent by the procurator take revenge on Judas. That will teach him how

Artwork #23 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And here Matthew Levi has been brought to the procurator. Pilate examines his parchment

Artwork #24 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And now let's return to Moscow and go straight to the black magic session at the Variety Theater. Look, Bengalsky's head is being torn off. Woland expressively facepalms

Artwork #25 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Meanwhile, the ladies are trying on new outfits on the Variety stage

Artwork #26 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • It's their own fault. The policeman thoughtfully blows his whistle: what should be done with them now?

Artwork #27 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here Behemoth and Azazello are beating the administrator Varenukha in a public lavatory

Artwork #28 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And here they are already rudely dragging Varenukha by his legs. Behemoth still has the chicken leg

Artwork #29 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here is an empty suit

Artwork #30 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And this is probably Hella. She is calling Baron Meigel, inviting him to the ball

Artwork #31 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • A sister of mercy with fangs and leeches appears before Doctor Kuzmin

Artwork #32 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • I give up. Who is this?

Artwork #33 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Margarita sees the Master in his exile in a dream

Artwork #34 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Is this Margarita and Natasha? This can't be the ladies' shop at the Variety Theater again? Ah, there's a boar sitting in the corner. So, we guessed correctly

Artwork #35 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Let's fly!

Artwork #36 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • And here I bet you won't guess what this illustration is about without my hint. Go on, try, and the correct answer will be below.

(Correct answer: this is Margarita flooding the apartment of the critic Latunsky, and the cleaning woman from the downstairs neighbors is putting basins under the streams of water from the ceiling).

Artwork #37 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Here Margarita has reached the naughty apartment and turned into Queen Margot

Artwork #38 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Baron Meigel did come to the ball after all. To his own misfortune

Artwork #39 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
