The Master and Margarita
From the album “Illustrations by Mircea Catusanu ”

The image shows a rough draft of the first chapter of The Master and Margarita. In 1932, however, this title did not yet exist. In the upper part of the sheet, Bulgakov is trying out titles for his future novel: The Great Chancellor, Satan, Here I Am, A Hat with a Feather (the last two are a reference to Mephistopheles), The Black Theologian, He Appeared, The Foreigner's Horseshoe (as is well known, the devil is supposed to have a hoof on one foot).
