Mircea Catusanu was born in Romania. A bachelor and master of fine arts (painting) from the National University of Arts in Bucharest, he now lives and works in New York as a freelance illustrator and artist, and sometimes a photographer for various well-known publications (like The Washington Post).

  • The image shows a rough draft of the first chapter of The Master and Margarita. In 1932, however, this title did not yet exist. In the upper part of the sheet, Bulgakov is trying out titles for his future novel: The Great Chancellor, Satan, Here I Am, A Hat with a Feather (the last two are a reference to Mephistopheles), The Black Theologian, He Appeared, The Foreigner's Horseshoe (as is well known, the devil is supposed to have a hoof on one foot).
