I must confess, I found myself at a loss when I tried to define the genre in which Boris Fomin works. What is it—surrealism? Primitivism? Naïvism? But really, why try to force art into the rigid frames of definitions and terms when its purpose is precisely to step beyond them? True art has every right to break the canon, for its highest goal is to change the viewer, to divide their life into “before” and “after.” And in this, Boris Fomin succeeds completely: once you’ve seen his illustrations for The Master and Margarita, your world will never be the same.
