These illustrations by Natalia Pechenina were drawn as her diploma project while she was studying in the art department of Moscow State Pedagogical University. The outcome, in my view, is quite entertaining.

  • At Patriarch’s Ponds a glamorous Woland appears, dressed entirely in lace.

Artwork #1 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Despite his cast‑off clothes, Fagott is every bit as glamorous.

Artwork #2 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Even Berlioz is glamorous, desiccated and reduced to a skull, while the glamorous Woland—sporting glamorous earrings—holds a glamorous little crucifix in his left hand.

Artwork #3 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • But the Roman legionary is downright brutal.

Artwork #4 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • The Master has already gone gray despite his tender seventeen years—and yes, he is glamorous.

Artwork #5 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”
  • Kawaii Behemoth is so kawaii, nya!

Artwork #6 | Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita”

And there's much more to see!
