Alexander Sergeyevich Bakulevsky is an Honored Artist of Russia and a 1967 graduate of the Repin Institute of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. For more than forty years he devoted himself to the art of wood engraving and became one of its most authoritative masters. His prints have been exhibited both in Russia and abroad—in Italy, Germany, France, Austria, and beyond—and are held by the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow’s Pushkin Museum, Vienna’s Albertina, and many other institutions.
Among the books he has illustrated is The Master and Margarita. One handmade edition, printed directly from boxwood blocks, contains these engravings in a single, unique copy. In 2011 Alexander Sergeyevich kindly granted permission to reproduce the series here—my sincere thanks to him.
